Laparoscopic Fundoplication
Fundoplication is a laparoscopic procedure performed for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) to prevent acid reflux, where acid from your stomach travels up into your oesophagus.
Acid reflux happens because a valve at the lower eosphageal sphincter fails to close when the food arrives at your stomach.
It is usual for a small amount of acid to travel into your oesophagus, but if this happens too frequently, it can cause symptoms of a burning sensation or heartburn.
The pain of heartburn may move up towards the neck and throat and when acid backwash radiates up into the back of the throat and mouth, it causes an unpleasant bitter or sour taste.
